NAPHL Showcase October Recap: Oct 1 - 4

Esmark Stars AAA U18, U16 and U14 Teams See Action in St. Louis

The Esmark Stars AAA Hockey program had its Midget Major (U18), Midget Minor (U16) and Bantam Major (U14) teams in action this past weekend, Oct. 1-4, as they traveled to St. Louis, MO, and the St. Peters Rec Plex, for the second North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) event of the season.

The U14 Stars opened play on Friday, Oct. 1, and dropped a 4-1 decision to the showcase host Car Shield AAA. Luke Mink bagged the lone Stars goal with an assist from Trey Dopson. Noah Frohnhofer suffered the loss in goal.

They return to the ice later that afternoon and dropped a 5-1 decision to league newcomer the Chicago Reapers. Emmet McClain was the Stars goal scorer. Aiden Moskovitz picked up the lone assist. Kyle McLaughlin suffered the loss in goal.

On Saturday, the Stars rode a big 5-goal third period to a 7-2 win over the Madison Capitals. Vitaliy Ulanov (2G, 1A), Emmet McClaine (1G, 2A), Nino DiPietro, Joeseph Vecchio, Liam Mahoney and Thomas Barefoot scored goals. Tripp Goehring, Vladyslav Bomaziuk and Aiden Moskovitz added assists. Noah Frohnhofer picked up the win in goal.

The Bantam Major Stars closed the season's second NAPHL Showcase with an 11-0 shutout win over the Des Moines Buccaneers on Sunday. Emmet McClaine (3G, 1A) paced the offense with a three-goal hat-trick. Ian Morganti (2G, 1A), Luke Mink (1G, 2A), Joseph Vecchio (1G, 2A), Miller (1G, 1A), Jacob Kraus, Trey Dopson, and Thomas Barefoot also scored goals.  Liam Mahoney (2A), Julian Kemp, Nino DiPietro Aiden Moskovitz, and Vitaliy Ulanov all added assists. Kyle McLaughlin earned both the shutout and win in goal.

The (2-2-0-0) showing in St. Louis see the U14 Stars overall record stand at (6-4-3-0).

The U16 Stars opened play in St. Louis on Saturday, Oct. 2, grabbing a 3-2 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers. Colin Ruffner (1G, 1A), Wesley Schwarzmiller and Mark Trischler scored for the Stars. And Aaron Stawiarski (2A) picked up a pair of assists. Newcomer Owen Byers claimed his first win of the season in goal.

Later Saturday evening, the Stars would skate to a 2-1 win over the Chicago Reapers. Mark Trischler and Aaron Stawiarski scored for the Stars.  Max Rutkowski picked up the lone assist. Ian Amaranto was outstanding in goal and picked up the victory between the pipes.

On Sunday the Stars would drop a 2-1 decision to the event host Car Shield AAA in an overtime shootout. Aaron Stawiarski continued his hot hand and scored the Stars lone goal. Car Shield would manage to sneak a third period goal past goaltender Owen Byers to knot the game at 1-1. Then following a four minute 3 on 3 overtime, Car Shield would grab a shootout win in the second round of shooters.

The Midget Minor Stars closed their showcase on Monday, with a 3-2 overtime loss to Northstar Christian Academy. Colin Ruffner and Max Rutkowski spotted the Stars a 2-0 lead, with Wesley Schwarzmiller and Aaron Stawiarski earning assists. But undefeated Northstar Academy would find the back of the net twice in the third period, with the tying goal occurring with a little over two and half minutes remaining in regulation, to send the game to OT. The Stars were unable to capitalize on a power play at the end of regulation and into overtime and Northstar would go on to collect a breakaway goal once back on 3-on-3 to end the game. Iannico Amaranto suffered his first league loss in goal despite a solid performance in net.

The (2-0-0-2) showing in St. Louis leaves the Midget Minor Stars with an overall record of (12-1-1-2).

The U18 Stars, ranked #12 in the nation entering the event, www.myhockeyrankings.com, opened play on Saturday dropping a penalty-filled affair 8-0 to the Nation's #4 ranked  Northstar Christian Academy. Both Nikita Volski and Sam Boos would see time in net, with Volski suffering the loss in goal. The Stars would manage to collect 115 minutes in penalty time and Northstar would capitalize with four power-play goals in 11 opportunities with the man advantage, including several five-on-threes and a five-minute major.

On Sunday, Oct. 3, the Stars Midget Major rebounded with a 3-1 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers. Derek Pietrzyk (1G, 1A), Maddox Rearic (1G, 1A) and Chase Williams scored for Esmark. Ray Janik, Shane Kozilna and Cole Mitchell picked up assists. Nikita Volski stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced to earn the win in goal.

Later Sunday evening, then the Stars would drop a 4-2 decision to the Nation's #10 team, the Chicago Reapers. Shane Miller and Shane Kozlina spotted the Stars a 2-0 lead, with Justin Mettrick, Hunter Fairmain, Keith Smilowitz and Ethan Zupanc picking up assists. But the Reapers roared back with three goals late in the second period to grab a 3-2 lead. They would add an empty net goal with :01 second remaining in regulation to settle the final score. Sam Boos suffered the loss in goal, stopping 28 of the 31 shots he faced.

The U18 Stars closed the showcase with a 8-3 win over showcase host Car Shield AAA. Ethan Zupanc (2G, 1A), Hunetr Fairmain (1G, 2A), Keith Smilowitz (1G, 2A), Justin Mettrick (1G, 1A), Liam Varmecky (1G, 1A), Shane Kozlina (1G, 1A), and Derek Pietrzyk scored for the Stars. Liam McClain (2A), Shane Miller (2A), Logan Dittenhafer and Cole Mitchell added assists. Nikita Volski picked up his second win of the Showcase, stopping 23 of the 26 shots he faced in goal.

The (2-2-0-0) showing in St. Louis leaves the Midget Major Stars with an overall record of (10-3-1-0).
